"Fuel cell-based air independent propulsion (AIP) system of Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) for strategic applications (e.g. submarines) demand an on-board generation of hydrogen (H2) from diesel. On board generation of hydrogen through autothermal reforming of diesel looks attractive because of high volumetric energy density and easy availability of diesel.

This process is usually a catalytic process, but as the sulphur content in commercial diesel accelerates the reforming catalyst deactivation. The praysee and his team developed a non- catalytic autothermal reformer at IIT Gandhinagar, but the low single-pass efficiency of this reformer in spite of an efficient pre-reactor, developed along with it requires a larger reformer size and diesel recycling, thereby increasing the system complexity. The single-pass conversion efficiency of vaporized diesel fuel in a non-catalytic autothermal reformer can be enhanced with the help of an efficent static mixer (spiral or SiC foam). The project aims to enhance the performance of a non-catalytic diesel autothermal reformer using static mixtures to increase the submerged endurance of the submaries"

"Human urine exists in two states, fresh and hydrolyzed, which dictates the form of nitrogen able to be recovered. In fresh urine, the dominant form of nitrogen is urea. The urea can be hydrolyzed into ammonia and in this project, we aim to recover the ammonia that is present in free form as well as which has been obtained upon urea hydrolysis.

The project's goals are to (i) fabricate novel nanobio composites capable of urea hydrolysis and adsorption, (ii) use the adsorbed nitrogen as a potent source of ammonia, and (iii) development of an urine treatment system using our approach to hydrolysis and recovery of ammonia."

SysIDEA Robotics

We propose to develop such a compliant actuator that will be of immediate utility in robotics applications and can be commercialized as made available as an indegenous product. Actuators and robots for precise movements along with the ability to manipulate objects in predictable situations and predictable environments have matured over the past several decades, and such robots with high degree of sophistication are widely used in industries and various applications.

These actuators and robots are stiff in interaction and have no compliance. However, it is being increasingly recognized that compliant actuators and with series-elastic elements offer several advantages over traditional actuators in terms of safety (due to its relatively low mechanical impedance), robustness, and increased peak power output. These are particularly useful for robots operating in uncertain environments. In addition, force bandwidth and ability to accommodate higher communication delays are other highly desirable features of SEA that make them attractive in many practical applications. Since robots are increasingly being developed for tasks involving physical interactions with uncertain environments, humans, or other robots, compliant actuation is desired in such situations. This area has been receiving much attention of late and is a fast-growing area in the domain of robotics.

Motor-based actuators are central elements in electromechanical devices. The vast majority of such devices also require precise control of motors (speed or velocity or torque) that necessitates the use of 'motor drivers' and micro-controllers. The current generation of motor drivers is not optimal.

Its implementation leads to motors' electrical noise (buzzing sounds), fluctuations in motor currents, poorer voltage resolution in motor control and less-efficient motor characteristics. We propose novel hardware & software with a new approach to constructing a motor driver. We aim to develop a device that improves all the shortcomings mentioned earlier.

W3D scanning plays essential roles in many sectors nowadays. For example, it is being used for reverse engineering and industry inspections, for interior designing and AEC sectors, in forensic sciences for crime scene reconstruction, in medical sectors for 3D scanning of patient organs or full body, in robotics and autonomous systems for navigation and collision avoidance. But even after having such wide utility, the application of 3D scanners are hindered in the Indian market due to two major reasons.

First one is, scanner characteristics are not according to the requirements of the Indian market and another one is the pricing of such scanners. Even after having such demands in various fields and even after identifying the increasing demand, we identified that there is a lack of development of such scanners which can satisfy the needs of the Indian market. Due to this, the scanners need to be imported from other countries which makes it unaffordable in price and incompatible in use. So we, Zevien Technologies Pvt. Ltd. aims to solve this problem by developing 3D scanners according to the needs of the Indian market and at an affordable price point.

Concrete printing is rapidly emerging and disruptive technology in construction sector. However, automated reinforcement of concrete printing is still challenging which renders the technology to harness its full potential. Fibre mesh reinforcement seems a plausible approach for reinforcement. The current project aims to design and develop an indigenous concrete printing setup for synchronous introduction of fibre mesh in concrete layers (filaments) during the printing process itself.

A innovative design of nozzle (printhead) will be developed for automatic embedment of fibre mesh in concrete layers. Such printed layers are expected to exhibit the properties somewhat similar to textile reinforced concrete (TRC). Additionally, it has several other technical advantages also.

Conventionally available cancer therapy for example chemotherapy lacks precision and causes toxicity problems. Therefore, targeted drug delivery is preferred as an alternative method to reduce side effects and improve drug bioavailability. But there are problems of drug leakage before reaching the site. Hence CQDs (carbon quantum dots) are proposed to be efficient targeting agents with dual nano carriers properties of bioimaging and targeted drug delivery with minimum cytotoxicity.

Introducing a new drug candidate to the market is a complex and time-demanding process that at least costs pharmaceuticals an average of billion dollars and 10-15 years of research and development. Out of the four stages of drug discovery, the critical yet time-consuming process is identifying the hit and valid drug candidate for the target of interest. This process covers at least 5-6 years in the overall phase of drug discovery. Hence, reducing this gap would eventually decrease the time gap in identifying the hit molecules and fast-track the drug discovery process.

Our previous findings with TTK, a protein kinase that is highly overexpressed in breast cancer, we aim to develop the protein kinase assay to screen our in-house designed small molecule as a TTK inhibitor. The project goals are to i) design and develop the protein expression and purification assay for TTK and ii) develop a protein inhibition assay for screening the small molecules. The project will further be taken up to more proteins to design the assay kit.

Dr. Vishal Joshi

Skin is the largest organ of any living species and plays an essential role in protecting internal organs against external damage and microbial invasion. Civilian settings and battlefields can cause serious skin injuries. Recent data indicate every year roughly 2 million people die due to hemorrhaging or blood loss and physical trauma. Dead due to bleeding is very quick and requires QUICK control.

We are addressing this issue by modifying blood properties using suitable biopolymers. Example, traumatic injury for soldiers in combat, civilians involved in serious accidents, violent altercations, and uncontrolled hemorrhage during childbirth or to pregnant women. Similar list of unmet needs is also available from veterinary areas where rapid and reliable solutions are needed for domestic animals. Some non-health care problems, like blood leakage proof feminine hygiene pads and control of hospital acquired infection due to blood spillage in hospitals, also need similar solutions.

We are in the waste-to-renewable-energy generation (fuel and burner) business. We produce solid fuel pellets from municipal solid waste and agricultural waste which can be cleanly combusted in our Industrial grade fully automatic burners. These pellets are a replacement for Industrial fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) that are harmful to the environment. This solid fuel is carbon neutral, self-sustaining, locally sourced and an import substitution.

We manufacture industrial solid fuel burners that replace fossil fuel-fired burners in industrial process heating. Boilers, thermic fluid heaters, hot air generators, furnaces, kilns, and ovens can be retrofitted with our burners and start their decarbonisation journey using our RDF pellets. We have been deploying our solutions in Industries since Dec 2021.
